Method
- Begin by placing a sealed can of sweetened condensed milk in a large pot. Ensure the can is on its side so that it can be completely covered with water.
- Add enough water to the pot to make sure it’s at least 1 to 2 inches above the top of the can.
- Cover the pot and place it over medium heat until it reaches a gentle boil. Once it does, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 2 to 3 hours.
- After simmering, carefully use tongs to remove the can from the pot and let it cool to room temperature.
- Alternatively, pour the sweetened condensed milk into a bowl, cover it, and place it on a double boiler over simmering water. Cook for 1 to 2 hours until it’s thick and caramel-colored.
- For oven method, preheat your oven to 425°F. Pour the milk into a glass baking dish that fits inside a larger dish. Cover with foil and add hot water to the larger dish.
- Bake for 45 minutes, then carefully stir and return to the oven for another 45 minutes to 1 and a half hours.
- Let cool in the water bath until it reaches room temperature.
- Another method is using an Instant Pot. Place the can on its side, fill with water to the Max Capacity line, seal, and set to Manual (High) for 35 minutes.
- Let the pressure release naturally and cool completely before removing the can.
Notes
Be sure to monitor the water level during cooking. This method allows you to make more than one can at a time.
